As our female guinea pigs (sows) age, they are faced with higher risks of reproductive diseases, most commonly affecting their ovaries and mammary glands (breasts). Some of these conditions can be life-threatening, and they can be prevented through early sterilisation.
Otitis externa, or inflammation of the external ear, is relatively common in dogs and cats. Causes include excess humidity/ water in the ear canal, ear mites, or it can be a manifestation of a more generalised skin problem such as allergies or atopic dermatitis. Clinical signs include redness of the skin of the ear flap or canal, itchiness, headshaking, odour, excessive ear discharge and pain when cleaning the ear.
Glaucoma is the increase of pressure inside the eye. The eye is a fluid filled structure where the fluid is used to maintain eye shape and provide nourishment to the tissues in the eye.
