Guinea Pigs and their Ears
How does ear infection cause head tilt and neurological signs?
Guinea pigs commonly have infection in the middle ear and inner ear. Bacteria from a respiratory infection can track their way up the eustachian tube and settle in the middle ear. Infection in middle and inner ears can develop pus, affecting their vestibular balance.

This can look like:
- Head tilt
- Circling in one direction
- Imbalance
- Nystagmus- involuntary eye scanning

What's next?
CT Scan and cone beam CT (CBCT) scan can be used to diagnose middle ear infection (otitis media).
After diagnosis, a myringotomy procedure will be scheduled. This is a minimally invasive procedure that involves creating a hole in the ear drum and therapeutic irrigation of the middle ear. The sample of pus removed will be sent for culture and sensitivity to choose the most ideal antimicrobial treatment. This procedure is done under general anesthesia to ensure minimal pain and stress.
