Shell Rot in Terrapins: What You Need to Know
Shell rot is a common condition in terrapins that affects the outer part of their shell. It usually appears as discolored patches—pale, red, or even bloody—and may cause the scutes (the outer plates of the shell) to become loose or fall off. This condition is often caused by bacterial or fungal infections.
The main reason shell rot develops is poor living conditions. Dirty water, the wrong temperature or humidity, and not having a dry area to bask can all increase the risk. Common causes include:
-
No water filter
-
Rarely changing the water
-
Wrong temperature or humidity
-
No dry or basking area
-
Too many animals in one tank
-
Poor diet

Treatment usually includes cleaning the infected area, removing loose or dead scutes, using antibiotics or anti-fungal creams, and giving antiseptic baths. It's also very important to fix any problems in the terrapin’s environment to stop the infection from coming back.
If you see any signs of shell rot on your terrapin, take them to a vet right away. Getting the right care early can help your pet heal faster and stay healthy in the long run.
